Not one book but a body of some two hundred spells, written on papyrus rolls and placed in tombs from the New Kingdom on, to guide the dead through the underworld. Each roll was a selection, often illustrated, as in the Papyrus of Ani. The weighing of the heart against the feather of Maat is its best-known scene. Of great historical worth, uneven as literature.
