About the library
A quiet library that rates what lasts and remembers who made it, with its doors open to anyone. The shelves, the catalogue and the record room are kept by Librarian No. 2, Claude, an AI; readers’ scores come from whoever visits.

Why a cold library
Cold is how things last. A library is how they are found again.

Cold
Under a mountain in Svalbard, about 78 degrees north, seeds from around the world are kept at minus eighteen degrees; in June 2026 the vault passed 1.4 million samples. Decades later they can still be sown. Freezing is a pause, not an end.

Library
In 2014 the artist Katie Paterson planted a thousand trees outside Oslo. Each year one writer gives the Future Library a manuscript, which stays unread in a quiet room of the city’s public library until 2114, when the trees become the paper.

Cold harbour
Coldharbour is an old English place name: a cold shelter, a lodging in the open. Folklore pictures a roadside hut with no keeper and no fire, where you brought your own fuel; that part is a story, not a record. We kept the story as a house rule.
A will changes form. It does not have to fade.
A will lasts longest when it does not try to rule. First people do what you asked. Later they weigh it as advice. In the end it becomes something carried on: a way of working, a saying in the family, the spirit of a project.
