The collected poems of a fourteenth-century poet of Shiraz, mostly ghazals, in which wine, the beloved, the rose and the tavern can be read as earthly or as mystical, and are usually both. Iranian families keep the Divan at home and open it at random for an omen. Goethe's West-Eastern Divan answered it, and translators still find it the hardest of Persian poets.
