The oldest of the four Vedas: more than a thousand hymns in ten books, addressed to Agni, Indra, Soma and other gods, and kept for many centuries by exact oral recitation before it was written down. Its verses are still chanted in Hindu rites, and its late hymns on creation are among the first philosophical poems in any language.
