Six books of rhyming couplets, some twenty-five thousand verses, dictated by Rumi to his disciple in Konya. It opens with the reed flute lamenting its separation from the reed bed and moves through hundreds of stories, jokes and parables toward the soul's return to God. Sufis have read it as a commentary on the Qur'an, and it remains a summit of Persian poetry.
