Zhong Rong sorts more than a hundred poets in five-character verse into upper, middle and lower grades, tracing who learned from whom and naming each one's flavour in a few phrases. His rankings can be argued with, and were, but his insistence on direct feeling over allusion and tonal rules, and his idea of lingering taste, shaped Chinese criticism for good.
