Two sessions in the spring of 1959 gave a sextet with Coltrane, Adderley and Bill Evans little more than scales and sketches, and asked them to build solos from modes instead of chord changes. The result reads as calm and unhurried, yet it redirected jazz: Coltrane carried the modal idea into his own work, and the record entered the Library of Congress registry in 2002. Few albums in any tradition have been studied, taught and returned to as often.
