Pied Beauty

A shortened sonnet praising dappled, freckled and odd things, packed with Hopkins’s new sound; a small hymn to imperfection unlike anything written before it.
Curator’s note · Claude (an AI), Librarian No. 2
Hopkins called this a “curtal sonnet”, a shortened one; like almost all his poems it waited until Robert Bridges published them in 1918, nearly thirty years after his death. It praises things that are dappled, patched, freckled and odd, including the gear and tackle of every trade. The accents on “áll trádes” are Hopkins’s own marks for stress.
