Begun by Ban Biao, written by his son Ban Gu and finished by his daughter Ban Zhao after Ban Gu died in prison, the Han shu covers the Western Han in one hundred chapters. It was the first history in Sima Qian's form to cover a single dynasty, the model for every official history after it. Its prose is more formal than the Shiji's, and its treatises on law, economy, geography and books are invaluable.
