Burckhardt tried to describe a whole culture at once, in six essays: the state as a work of art, the development of the individual, the revival of antiquity, the discovery of the world and of man, society and festivals, morality and religion. Later research has qualified much of it, especially the sharp break with the Middle Ages. But it invented the modern idea of the Renaissance, and of cultural history.
