Chen Shou, born in Shu and later a Jin official, wrote the history of Wei, Shu and Wu in sixty-five spare chapters of biography, without tables or treatises. His restraint left gaps, which Pei Songzhi filled in the fifth century with a commentary quoting more than two hundred other works. Read together they are a lesson in comparing sources, and the ground on which the later novel was built.
