Written more than two centuries after the Eastern Han fell, Fan Ye's history distilled many earlier accounts and outlived them. He added chapters for groups the older histories had no room for, among them exemplary women, recluses and eunuchs, and his chapter on the Western Regions gives early Chinese reports of Rome. He was executed before finishing; the treatises were later supplied from Sima Biao's work.
