Written in 1377 as the introduction to a universal history, the Muqaddimah begins by listing why historians err and then asks what laws govern human society. Its answers, about group solidarity, the rise and decay of dynasties, desert and city, crafts and prices, read like early social science. Ibn Khaldun was a working statesman and it shows. Few books have rethought what history is for so thoroughly.
