A Sanskrit verse chronicle of the kings of Kashmir in eight books, written in 1148 and 1149. Kalhana asks that a poet relate the past like a judge, free of love or hatred, and says he consulted eleven earlier chronicles. The early books are legend with impossible reigns; the last ones, close to his own time, are detailed, bitter and precise. It is rare in early Indian writing for its sense of chronology.
