Twenty-three pairs of lives, each setting a Greek beside a Roman, plus four single lives. Plutarch says plainly in the Life of Alexander that he writes lives, not histories: a joke or a small habit may show character better than a battle. The method is moral rather than critical, yet the anecdotes are often the only ones we have, and Shakespeare and Montaigne drew deeply on them.
