Huang takes an unremarkable year of the Ming and builds the book around six people: the Wanli emperor, two grand secretaries, an upright official, a general and a dissenting philosopher. Through them he argues that the empire was run on moral rhetoric rather than workable institutions and finance. The thesis is broad and sometimes too neat, but the method of seeing structure through lives is original, and its readership in Chinese has been enormous.
