A serious writer in 1960s Hong Kong grinds out martial-arts and sex serials for money and drinks to bear it. Liu Yichang tells it in fragmented first person, often called the first stream-of-consciousness novel in Chinese, with one chapter only a line long. Its portrait of a literary conscience worn down by the market is bitter, funny and still recognisable.
