An old Evenki woman, near the end of her people's reindeer-herding life in the forests of the far northeast, tells the story of her clan across a century. Chi Zijian writes with deep respect for their shamanism and their land, and the nature writing is lovely. The narrative can feel elegiac by programme, but it gives a rare voice to a vanishing world.
