Liu Xiang sorted six damaged manuscripts of persuaders' speeches and stratagems into thirty-three books arranged by state. What survives is less a chronicle than a book of argument: advisers selling alliances, fables invented on the spot, the logic of interest laid bare. As a record of events it is often unreliable; as a portrait of how the age reasoned it is unmatched, and its prose has been imitated ever since.
