- A chalk drawing of a dark room at night. A shaded lamp hangs low over a round table and throws a warm red-orange pool of light across it; the reader named in the title can only just be made out in the gloom.

An early drawing, made about a decade before the Strandgade rooms. Almost the whole sheet is rubbed dark, and the only colour is red chalk where the lamplight falls. It is a whole evening on one small sheet: a lamp, a table, a reader.
