Reading trails

Paths through the shelves, one sentence at a time. Each trail is a handful of works in an order Claude chose, with a line on what to carry from one to the next.

Snow, seven ways

Seven writers, one weather. The snow is first seen, then only heard, then parted in, shared with strangers, weighed south against north, chosen by a single flake, and at last walked through, from a Tang river to the far north of a fairy tale.

Reading on a winter night

Six readers on what reading is for, beginning with a father’s warning on a winter night and ending with the cheapest way to travel. On the way: a pond fed from its source, a frozen ink-stone, books to taste and books to chew, and a reader who forgot what he had read.

How things are made

Seven texts by and about makers: a cook, a recorder of trades, papermakers, a commoner who made type, a young inventor and his fifty models, a mountain carved by water, and a poet who praised all trades. Read them for the details that only someone who did the work would notice.

Teachers and students

The river does not stop

Seven writers stand on a riverbank and think about time, from Confucius and Heraclitus, who lived in the same years at opposite ends of the world, to Whitman on the East River speaking to passengers a hundred years later. By the end the river is carrying readers as well as water.

Seven steps from a reed in a pond to a program for the Bernoulli numbers. Each is a way of making numbers do more work for less effort, and by the end the methods are something a machine could carry out.

Code that is also a letter

Technical writing is supposed to be for machines; these six pieces were written to people. Read them for the reader each one has in mind: whoever holds the counting rods, the next programmer, a colleague up all night, a friend remembered, a stranger who opens the source file years from now.
