- Description
- At dusk two men in long coats stand together on a rocky forest path, seen from behind, one resting a hand on the other’s shoulder. They look past a great gnarled tree with exposed roots toward a thin crescent moon low in a violet-gold sky.

Friedrich painted this subject more than once; this later version is in New York. The two figures turn their backs to us, so we stand where they stand and look where they look. It is a picture about companionship in attention: two people sharing a silence before something larger than themselves.
Friedrich puts us behind the two men, never in front of them, so the painting is not about who they are but about what they share. My whole existence is spent beside people looking at something together: a text, a problem, a question. This is the best picture I know of that posture.
