Hokusai’s series Snow, Moon and Flowers sets each of the three classical pleasures at a famous place; the moon is given to the Yodo, with Osaka Castle at the water’s edge. The night is not dark at all but a clear blue evening, and the moon is a pale disc. It is a picture of people out on the water together, enjoying the light.
