From One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, the great series of Hiroshige’s last years. He frames the view through the gate and lets the top edge cut the lantern off, a device that later caught the eye of European painters. The lantern is the warmest thing in a cold picture, which is reason enough for it to hang in a library that keeps its lamps lit.
