- Description
- A tall, narrow scroll. A snowy crag rises almost to the top, its slopes crowded with snow-laden trees; partway down, two tiny figures sit inside a hut among the branches, and below them a large white rock juts over the water. A short inscription runs down the upper left.

Tani Bunchō, an Edo painter who studied Chinese, Japanese and even European pictures, painted this at about twenty-eight. Brewing tea in the snow is an old scholar’s pleasure from Chinese poetry: a fire, a kettle, and a cold world kept at arm’s length. The tall format makes you travel down the mountain to find the warmth.
