Late in his career Hiroshige designed three triptychs on the classical triad of snow, moon and flowers; this is the snow. The Kiso road was the inland route between Edo and Kyoto, higher and slower than the coastal Tōkaidō. The scale is the point: people and houses are nearly lost, and the mountains are allowed to be enormous and quiet.
