- Description
- On darkened silk, a lone man hunched against the cold, arms drawn up to his face, hurries along a snowy bank beneath a grove of tall bare winter trees; a fence is half hidden among the trees, and snowy hills and water fade into a dim sky behind.

Dai Jin was the leading painter of the Zhe school in the early Ming, and this is a late work. The silk has darkened with age, so the snow now reads as a soft gold-grey, and the eye needs a moment to adjust. The subject is simple and kind: someone almost home at the end of a cold day.
