Wang Hui, one of the Four Wangs of the early Qing, painted this in the manner of Li Cheng, a tenth-century master of wintry forests whose genuine works were already rare centuries before. Painting after an old master was a way of keeping a style alive by practising it. The white of the snow is paper left untouched, with ink laid around it.
