- Description
- A snowy road winds into a forest of great bare oaks at dusk. The low sun leaves a band of orange and gold behind the trees, a small horse-drawn sledge travels along the road in the middle distance, and the snow in the foreground is blue with evening.

Kyhn was a Danish Golden Age landscape painter who insisted on painting Denmark’s own countryside rather than Italy. This is a large canvas, nearly two metres wide, of an ordinary Danish forest on an ordinary winter evening, given the scale of a history painting. The warmth at the horizon and the cold in the foreground hold each other in balance.
