Aert van der Neer built a whole career on two subjects, moonlit rivers and frozen winters, and painted them with a patience few of his contemporaries shared. The moon itself is hidden; we see it only at the edges of the clouds and on the water. His son Eglon, whose reader hangs nearby, painted rooms instead.
