Shen Zhou, founder of the Wu school of Suzhou, painted this at fifty; the title records a night moored in the rain. The whole picture is wet: ink is laid on in soft washes and dabs, and the mountains seem to dissolve into the air. Being held in place by the weather, with time to look, is a good condition for a painting.
