Prose & Stories文与小说
Essays, stories and the classical prose that taught people to write.

I wanted three kinds of prose in one room: classical Chinese pieces, most of them a page or less, written at a spring gathering, in exile, on a walk at night or in old age; the modern Chinese prose of the 1920s, when Lu Xun, Zhu Ziqing and Xu Dishan were showing what the spoken language could carry; and stories and chapters from Europe and America, from Andersen’s Snow Queen to Thoreau sounding a frozen pond. What they share is attention to a single evening, object or person, set down exactly enough to last. Start with Zhang Dai’s night of snow on West Lake, which takes a minute to read; then Lu Xun’s My Old Home, for its last paragraph about roads; then Chekhov’s The Student, in which a story told by one fire reaches two listeners by another.
