科学这一架，收的是第一手的讲述：亲眼看见、亲手算出一件事的人，用自己的话把它讲出来，从《墨经》里论影子的条目、欧几里得最早的证明，到居里夫人给杂志读者讲镭。中国和欧洲的文本并排摆放，因为它们常常从不同的路走到同一个地方：勾三股四弦五，在《周髀算经》里用一把折起的矩尺演示出来，到了欧几里得那里，成了卷一的第四十七命题。读它们，结论要读，方法更要读：伽利略一夜一夜地看木星，看够了才肯相信自己的眼睛；沈括拿远处大涧里的土柱，检验自己关于雁荡山的想法；孟德尔一颗一颗地数豌豆。先读法拉第的蜡烛，他说那是进入自然哲学最敞开的一扇门；再读伽利略和木星相处的那一个星期；然后读沈括写活字印刷的那一页。
